6 W% k/ N0 x* e4 J, W/ TThis is not a book about how to use LabVIEW or even a book on learning digital+ y! n- H1 U+ K: s. k5 {
signal processing (DSP). Instead it is more of a practical guide on how to enable# d- g7 p0 P8 W6 Z+ ]/ }
LabVIEW to tackle some real-world DSP and communication problems. This
( e3 P$ D9 P$ b9 v9 A# F  ?book assumes that the reader has a good grasp of many of the complex issues
/ A6 d; m* @; k, Sencountered in DSP and digital communications and also is at least skilled7 c% q. I3 \7 M
enough in LabVIEW to build a VI. When necessary, the book will dive into the
  N4 e7 z9 ?8 W, jheart of signal processing topics and their implications will be explored. Certain
' \. V) l( u5 Y, h9 k! f2 F$ a& Z( jtopics will be explained in enough detail so that the reader will know there is
* k; S. e; o7 H# a% F0 w9 N8 l& Fno hand waving or mystery involved. This material is meant to bridge the gap
- t6 C3 s; I& P% r1 n) bbetween obtaining theoretical knowledge and actually exercising that knowledge.
! [3 n8 ?* |, y7 i+ \LabVIEW provides us with an excellent set of tools for examining all sorts! M' t1 P4 w6 i  P3 j3 j
of DSP and digital communication topics. Its graphical nature allows us to
1 t, p& a- o9 ], Squickly and efficiently get to the core of a communication problem without all" B# V9 |" N2 a0 v' S
the overhead that generally accompanies a digital communication system. This/ e  {( R) w4 M/ j: x2 [" f
book will start out at the beginning of the DSP realm—sampling a signal. The
, I/ @: q8 U5 L+ }* K, J/ U$ aintermediate chapters will cover some basic building blocks and the final chapters1 d% {$ G# i* ~/ H+ K' |
will put it all together as a digital communication system.
. x4 w9 u1 Y# A9 {0 vAlot of signal processing books start out describing what a discrete time/ f2 G; {( }1 Z+ P9 w" f
sequence is, the advantages of DSP over analog methods, and the like. This( ]8 L1 p4 Q9 y- t( }  V. w- q
book skips all that and assumes that you already know enough about DSP to
. A/ p& `1 R3 |& N3 aget started and you probably have some very good references regarding where0 ]/ U: p$ E! {" T. ^
to go when you do not understand something. Instead this book focuses on% P' e' w0 Z# k' G5 N
putting that DSP knowledge to work using LabVIEW. Also, at the end of each
/ f/ c! Q5 |* jchapter is a list of references for the specific topics covered in that chapter. Of8 u( p( W- c9 Y# Z) Z! ]! U9 D7 l7 g
course the reader is encouraged to look at those references for any concept that
! g0 w2 i) g/ o$ h1 e) g# Pis not quite clear. If your DSP is a little rusty, or if you are new to the topic, a  r: S; C6 g& u2 l
good starting place would be to read Understanding Digital Signal Processing
! ^" ~/ a) U' l! Wby Rick Lyons before moving to the more advanced texts such as Discrete-Time5 ?, r) B, s+ I- ^5 f; P0 ?. u2 v
Signal Processing by Oppenheim and Schafer. The book by Lyons should give you. X; a" S: `0 a& X5 R
a good intuitive feel for many complicated DSP subjects while the Oppenheim2 w1 ~" u" v& E+ q, X. ~
and Schafer book will give you all the gory details on how and why.
