About This Book. ]1 M5 K# |$ f% k
This is not a book about how to use LabVIEW or even a book on learning digital
+ R& D& Y& T6 P  lsignal processing (DSP). Instead it is more of a practical guide on how to enable
+ ?/ z% P* L# n4 N# YLabVIEW to tackle some real-world DSP and communication problems. This
: @; L* k2 w2 c/ m5 ^  I& u5 wbook assumes that the reader has a good grasp of many of the complex issues
, h: ^; Z2 k5 l0 oencountered in DSP and digital communications and also is at least skilled: [# R6 C% D8 Y& I
enough in LabVIEW to build a VI. When necessary, the book will dive into the
% S7 v! u% r! _$ aheart of signal processing topics and their implications will be explored. Certain
5 t0 o; w5 G4 V" v9 I& x+ b3 ]0 s/ ~topics will be explained in enough detail so that the reader will know there is
! q& K; ?; L5 m1 @$ q3 @! ^4 _no hand waving or mystery involved. This material is meant to bridge the gap+ h9 t; B; N9 J% u, W
between obtaining theoretical knowledge and actually exercising that knowledge.1 Z9 K& _3 `# R( g) e' `
LabVIEW provides us with an excellent set of tools for examining all sorts2 w3 ~0 i* c# ~& b$ E
of DSP and digital communication topics. Its graphical nature allows us to
2 v" {) i- I3 c. R1 j. x' U5 ~quickly and efficiently get to the core of a communication problem without all1 A! K5 |0 L( u) K, B+ h  Z4 P) k' t
the overhead that generally accompanies a digital communication system. This  g! \8 A3 V6 M2 m7 Y
book will start out at the beginning of the DSP realm—sampling a signal. The- J  ^1 C. x7 X9 c" Z; l
intermediate chapters will cover some basic building blocks and the final chapters3 ~. m5 q  {# u4 l% [
will put it all together as a digital communication system.. S. S9 A2 i7 G; e5 Z& |' y+ m7 E  h
Alot of signal processing books start out describing what a discrete time
- V- v% V1 |8 ]$ o9 J" Wsequence is, the advantages of DSP over analog methods, and the like. This4 z0 P" D/ t1 u
book skips all that and assumes that you already know enough about DSP to9 S0 g. I$ k4 B1 F; p4 D8 i( t
get started and you probably have some very good references regarding where
1 U& W7 I( j. Q! Xto go when you do not understand something. Instead this book focuses on
" z' W0 \! u( R* k  z; w/ Qputting that DSP knowledge to work using LabVIEW. Also, at the end of each
1 P3 ?2 n* Q& I5 z7 k. P2 A1 Mchapter is a list of references for the specific topics covered in that chapter. Of
: }3 d4 L. Y$ l% e( [7 }* R( icourse the reader is encouraged to look at those references for any concept that* B, d* _# Q5 K0 O( L
is not quite clear. If your DSP is a little rusty, or if you are new to the topic, a
) b: a1 K) w( egood starting place would be to read Understanding Digital Signal Processing; E! z. ]1 z9 A8 I8 f& @
by Rick Lyons before moving to the more advanced texts such as Discrete-Time
4 X/ z8 a) [' H" uSignal Processing by Oppenheim and Schafer. The book by Lyons should give you
, j5 H0 v# Q" Y  {7 @& Wa good intuitive feel for many complicated DSP subjects while the Oppenheim
1 r3 v& |" _; ?2 c5 y( m4 E5 E; wand Schafer book will give you all the gory details on how and why.
