This is not a book about how to use LabVIEW or even a book on learning digital
* D4 a; w: @4 t) osignal processing (DSP). Instead it is more of a practical guide on how to enable
. [2 R4 g! j9 X- d3 ]LabVIEW to tackle some real-world DSP and communication problems. This: d+ s4 p! ~, |
book assumes that the reader has a good grasp of many of the complex issues: c" @+ y0 }% `. i: y" p
encountered in DSP and digital communications and also is at least skilled# V& @9 z6 N/ n) J1 K9 x
enough in LabVIEW to build a VI. When necessary, the book will dive into the
# I8 \! e+ T$ q- `$ jheart of signal processing topics and their implications will be explored. Certain) W4 [: K% f  z  ]8 ^
topics will be explained in enough detail so that the reader will know there is( r/ e- O' _# \& b4 v- _6 N
no hand waving or mystery involved. This material is meant to bridge the gap& t- U; |7 O8 K$ z+ H
between obtaining theoretical knowledge and actually exercising that knowledge.- m' h6 ^8 c; I4 Q
LabVIEW provides us with an excellent set of tools for examining all sorts
; N+ h/ l# W3 _4 @" Fof DSP and digital communication topics. Its graphical nature allows us to
9 J3 z- R9 l3 V8 L2 L, x, I/ A8 y5 {quickly and efficiently get to the core of a communication problem without all) L, _- `( W) D' u6 U3 _$ l8 f0 a
the overhead that generally accompanies a digital communication system. This3 l' ^+ [$ g$ z+ g; Z
book will start out at the beginning of the DSP realm—sampling a signal. The
' n9 k3 R% F) ^8 Y, l8 s* m$ D3 Dintermediate chapters will cover some basic building blocks and the final chapters
, X2 S5 S8 X9 u5 }will put it all together as a digital communication system.2 M3 i4 k1 R; v/ t
Alot of signal processing books start out describing what a discrete time6 T( F6 |$ i6 I/ Y+ o3 X/ b5 v
sequence is, the advantages of DSP over analog methods, and the like. This/ ^- a" E3 c, Z- J  G7 Z( y; `
book skips all that and assumes that you already know enough about DSP to" a/ c9 Z7 L% p! {! J1 F. T
get started and you probably have some very good references regarding where7 Z6 ^3 I, B- ^3 p
to go when you do not understand something. Instead this book focuses on3 c. r# h; d: i' r( y! R) `+ ~  X
putting that DSP knowledge to work using LabVIEW. Also, at the end of each. n, {, W( e5 B& {
chapter is a list of references for the specific topics covered in that chapter. Of
5 b6 e" l9 J% j; |) mcourse the reader is encouraged to look at those references for any concept that7 r. M+ |5 I8 \+ `+ ~% m" x
is not quite clear. If your DSP is a little rusty, or if you are new to the topic, a
9 v- U  W, b/ n) D0 H' mgood starting place would be to read Understanding Digital Signal Processing
, t! J, ?  p; b! D" M0 _by Rick Lyons before moving to the more advanced texts such as Discrete-Time
+ e, W: j* v- `Signal Processing by Oppenheim and Schafer. The book by Lyons should give you
0 D, u% I# Z, |: n* `- f9 e4 ^& ua good intuitive feel for many complicated DSP subjects while the Oppenheim# a: V* l+ {! u: c$ f: o+ `1 l' _
and Schafer book will give you all the gory details on how and why.
