This is not a book about how to use LabVIEW or even a book on learning digital+ ~, w6 ]7 o1 V2 k* d; Y  x% S8 B
signal processing (DSP). Instead it is more of a practical guide on how to enable
# a& |9 e" y. n: S: cLabVIEW to tackle some real-world DSP and communication problems. This
5 W5 S& h/ u7 u. L+ R  ^book assumes that the reader has a good grasp of many of the complex issues
/ v- @; V$ ?. [% f+ T) Q( Bencountered in DSP and digital communications and also is at least skilled: I9 p4 I  c9 }  t' C* c
enough in LabVIEW to build a VI. When necessary, the book will dive into the" S8 o+ n. e( V1 s7 m& l: G
heart of signal processing topics and their implications will be explored. Certain
" X) n! h% D" dtopics will be explained in enough detail so that the reader will know there is
, Q) k; K9 ^7 G1 {no hand waving or mystery involved. This material is meant to bridge the gap, X8 I5 ?; @3 W" B$ y
between obtaining theoretical knowledge and actually exercising that knowledge.
: l0 Z- L7 q3 p) d& b  w' D, nLabVIEW provides us with an excellent set of tools for examining all sorts
4 [; k- m0 @0 T2 J: V4 u* {of DSP and digital communication topics. Its graphical nature allows us to
5 x/ P! s5 r2 v% {+ |4 v- S; X4 P- d6 qquickly and efficiently get to the core of a communication problem without all+ O6 G: F+ P% G5 G* v) J( {
the overhead that generally accompanies a digital communication system. This
& \: u- G/ O" D9 ^" T6 c7 Rbook will start out at the beginning of the DSP realm—sampling a signal. The
- {$ ~4 u. k7 s! B: K2 \. |intermediate chapters will cover some basic building blocks and the final chapters3 G) {9 ~3 Y* [
will put it all together as a digital communication system.
1 |: W, r4 `& q' q; T1 R% h0 jAlot of signal processing books start out describing what a discrete time3 A; ]. G" J3 G: B/ _
sequence is, the advantages of DSP over analog methods, and the like. This
/ \) a8 Y  W# c/ a. e) Ibook skips all that and assumes that you already know enough about DSP to% {' s" q& D# ~  N( k
get started and you probably have some very good references regarding where
7 S+ G- B/ b; L% B* v3 s0 D# bto go when you do not understand something. Instead this book focuses on7 c" S1 H: k3 p: j
putting that DSP knowledge to work using LabVIEW. Also, at the end of each
2 M8 `8 ^# y. Y) Ichapter is a list of references for the specific topics covered in that chapter. Of% `8 }2 ~  k+ x# K. y5 B1 Q: S
course the reader is encouraged to look at those references for any concept that
$ e- z: b9 o7 Q1 L* Dis not quite clear. If your DSP is a little rusty, or if you are new to the topic, a. C2 o; c& ~+ U0 }
good starting place would be to read Understanding Digital Signal Processing
% i7 t, u% r( [  F" @$ s1 g7 ~4 ]- N0 nby Rick Lyons before moving to the more advanced texts such as Discrete-Time* I* h0 E  l3 U3 n  c
Signal Processing by Oppenheim and Schafer. The book by Lyons should give you
) T& ?% ^+ D  c& o+ {9 {a good intuitive feel for many complicated DSP subjects while the Oppenheim
& m4 E& t9 e; f! O( kand Schafer book will give you all the gory details on how and why.0 U  z+ M8 l6 Y) T
